The 2nd Public Forum on Quality of Service in the Nigerian
telecommunications industry being
hosted by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, kicks
off on April 1, 2008, at the
Sheraton Hotels, Abuja, with both the Minister of Information
and Communications, Mr. John
Odey, and the Minister of State, Alhaji Dasuki Nakande in
attendance.
The objectives of the forum, according to the NCC, are to
among other things; appraise the
current status of the Quality of Service in the Nigerian
telecommunications sector and the
impact made by several measures so far taken to address the
issue; identify specific
challenges that are prevailing with a view to advancing
practical solutions to address them.
The Quality of Service Working Group, a group of experts drawn
from different sections of
the telecoms industry, including the regulator, the operators
and representatives of
consumers, will present its report at the forum.
The CEO’s of the GSM operators; the Nigerian police, industry
associations, and consumer
rights groups will also make presentations while the new
industry key performance indicators
will be unveiled by the NCC at the forum expected to draw all
the industry stakeholders.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Communications, Senator
Sylvester Anyanwu, and the
chairman of the House Committee on Communications, Hon. Jerry
Manwe, are billed to attend
the forum.
An official of NCC, said the hosting of the 2nd Public Forum
on Quality of Service marks the
determination of the Commission to put the issue in the front
burner so as to resolve the
challenges quickly for the benefit of the subscribers across
the country.
The high point in the Commission’s effort was in the recent
directive to pay compensation
estimated at about N4.8 Billion to their subscribers on
account of prevalence of poor
quality of service on their networks.
